In addition to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/2008\/07\/wakajawaka-and-the-grand-wazoo\/\" target=\"_blank\">jazz orchestra classics by Frank\u00a0Zappa<\/a>, I keep coming back to these three:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nine Feet Underground<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/recsradio\/radio\/B00005A0V0\/ref=pd_krex_dp_001_005?ie=UTF8&amp;track=005&amp;disc=001\" target=\"_blank\">sample<\/a> but not a typical passage) from <em>In the Land of Grey and Pink<\/em> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/musica?aid=bay7ZWdz97D\" target=\"_blank\">Caravan<\/a> \u2014 9FU is a progressive rock masterpiece. It rambles through\u00a0several loosely connected improvisational and lyric &#8220;movements&#8221; with multiple key changes and unusual time signatures. Available only on CD (there are other live versions as well on MP3).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Atom Heart Mother<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Atom-Heart-Mother-Digital-Remaster\/dp\/B0011WAA7Y\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1252262199&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\">sample<\/a>) by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/musica?aid=kteLDMrjybG\" target=\"_blank\">Pink Floyd<\/a> \u2014 AHM is very classical in form and instrumentation. It makes use of a small orchestra and chorus (a sort of &#8220;ninth symphony&#8221; of rock classics). Available on CD and MP3.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Peaceful World<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/recsradio\/radio\/B00000I55Y\/ref=pd_krex_dp_002_004?ie=UTF8&amp;track=004&amp;disc=002\" target=\"_blank\">sample<\/a>) by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/musica?aid=YMgdggTM40N&amp;num=20\" target=\"_blank\">The Rascals<\/a> \u2014 PW is a pleasant extended jazz improvisation. One of the nicest musical &#8220;grooves&#8221; I know of.
