It draws on the research legacy of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nap.edu\/html\/biomems\/jolds.html\" target=\"_blank\">James Olds<\/a>, who did some of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/cgi\/content\/abstract\/127\/3294\/315\" target=\"_blank\">seminal experiments with electro-stimulation of the brain<\/a>. He referred to certain reward centers for basic drives such as hunger and sex. These became known collectively as the &#8220;pleasure centers&#8221; of the brain.<\/p>\n<p>Fine so far, but could there be other things driving us besides the basics? Apparently so. The article goes on to develop the theory that &#8220;Seeking&#8221; is an elemental drive on par with drugs, sex and rock &#8216;n&#8217; roll. This helps explain our attraction to modern tools such as &#8220;crackberrys,&#8221; <a title=\"Is Google Making Us Stupid?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/doc\/200807\/google\" target=\"_blank\">Google<\/a> and Twitter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I found this recent article in Slate fascinating.
