{"id":1140,"date":"2009-12-02T21:59:24","date_gmt":"2009-12-03T01:59:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/?p=1140"},"modified":"2009-12-07T04:48:35","modified_gmt":"2009-12-07T08:48:35","slug":"yucatan-trip-2009-3-coba-ruins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/2009\/yucatan-trip-2009-3-coba-ruins","title":{"rendered":"Yucatan Trip 2009 &#8211; Coba Ruins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/mexico09\/coba\/content\/bin\/images\/large\/IMG_0747_8_9_tonemapped.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1142 alignright\" title=\"mark-and-simone-at-coba\" src=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/mark-and-simone-at-coba-223x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"223\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/mark-and-simone-at-coba-223x300.jpg 223w, https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/mark-and-simone-at-coba.jpg 763w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 223px) 85vw, 223px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On our drive to the coast we stopped for a few hours to see the ruins at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coba\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Coba<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0The site sits <a href=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/thumb\/4\/42\/Cobamap.png\/423px-Cobamap.png\" target=\"_blank\"><em>between two lakes<\/em><\/a> and is divided up into groupings several kilometers apart.\u00a0These are much more rustic with less restoration.\u00a0[<a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/mexico09\/coba\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>photo gallery<\/strong><\/a>]\u00a0One exception was the <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/mexico09\/coba\/content\/bin\/images\/large\/IMG_0747_8_9_tonemapped.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Ball Court<\/strong><\/a> which was very small an intimate compared with the others we&#8217;d seen.\u00a0One <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/mexico09\/coba\/content\/bin\/images\/large\/IMG_0755_3_4_tonemapped.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">tall pyramid<\/a> had <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/mexico09\/coba\/content\/bin\/images\/large\/IMG_0756.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">vultures sunning themselves<\/a> at the top.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/mexico09\/coba\/content\/bin\/images\/large\/IMG_0766_8_7_tonemapped.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1216\" title=\"round-pyramid\" src=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/round-pyramid.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"97\" \/><\/a>As we walked along the path through the jungle we came upon this cute little <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/mexico09\/coba\/content\/bin\/images\/large\/IMG_0766_8_7_tonemapped.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">round pyramid<\/a>. There were several stelae covered by thatched roofs, but the inscriptions were all but gone. &lt;frown&gt;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/mexico09\/coba\/content\/bin\/images\/large\/IMG_0776_5_7_tonemapped.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1217\" title=\"nohoch-mul-pyramid\" src=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/nohoch-mul-pyramid.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"93\" \/><\/a>We finally reached the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/mexico09\/coba\/content\/bin\/images\/large\/IMG_0770_71_69_tonemapped.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Nohoch Mul Pyramid<\/a> and started to climb. The <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/mexico09\/coba\/content\/bin\/images\/large\/IMG_0779.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">view from the top<\/a> was of spectacular!
