Last Days of the Incas<\/a><\/strong>
\nKim MacQuarrie<\/p>\n

It is serendipitous that this book came out within a few months of my trip\u00a0to South America. A history book\u00a0that reads like a novel, it provided much needed context for what I’d\u00a0seen. It begins and ends with Machu Picchu<\/a>, from about\u00a01400 to the present. The story really starts with Francisco\u00a0Pizarro’s<\/a> “discovery” of the Incas,\u00a0and kidnapping of the emperor Atahualpa<\/a>.\u00a0The author makes the important point that the Conquistadors were not\u00a0military men, but “entrepreneurs with swords.” They took over Cusco<\/a> (the\u00a0“navel” of the Inca world) and Saxawaman<\/a>.\u00a0They informed their captives of The\u00a0Requirement<\/a> that concludes by blaming the victims if they get hurt, “the\u00a0deaths and losses which shall accrue from this are your fault.” Many\u00a0pages are devoted to the rebel Manco\u00a0Inca<\/a> and his progressive movement to Pisac<\/a>, Ollantaytambo<\/a>,\u00a0and beyond in an attempt to evade the Spaniards. The book concludes with\u00a0a summary of recent discoveries, intrigues and fraud.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
