The &#8220;Lost City of the Incas&#8221; was never really lost.\u00a0This is where <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pachacuti\" target=\"_blank\">Pachacuti<\/a> and\u00a0other Inca aristocracy came to relax back in the late 1400s CE. Surrounded\u00a0on three sides by the <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/peru07\/machu_picchu\/pages\/IMG_0946.html\" target=\"_blank\">Urubamba\u00a0River<\/a>, the view is truly spectacular\u00a0with <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/peru07\/machu_picchu\/pages\/machu-picchu-panorama3-2k.html\" target=\"_blank\">countless\u00a0peaks<\/a> receding into the sky. The site itself is dominated by <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/peru07\/machu_picchu\/pages\/machu-picchu-panorama2-2k.html\" target=\"_blank\">Huayna\u00a0Picchu<\/a>, which rises a thousand feet and has <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/peru07\/machu_picchu\/pages\/IMG_0913.html\" target=\"_blank\">ruins\u00a0on top<\/a>. The\u00a0terraced <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/peru07\/machu_picchu\/pages\/IMG_0837.html\" target=\"_blank\">agricultural\u00a0district<\/a> supplied  food. The <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/peru07\/machu_picchu\/pages\/IMG_0751.html\" target=\"_blank\">urban\u00a0district<\/a> provided\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/peru07\/machu_picchu\/pages\/IMG_0955.html\" target=\"_blank\">accommodations<\/a> for\u00a0several hundred inhabitants, including a series of <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/peru07\/machu_picchu\/pages\/IMG_0721.html\" target=\"_blank\">sixteen\u00a0fountains<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/peru07\/machu_picchu\/pages\/IMG_0786.html\" target=\"_blank\">royal\u00a0apartments<\/a> and several <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/peru07\/machu_picchu\/pages\/IMG_0731.html\" target=\"_blank\">religious\u00a0areas<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/peru07\/machu_picchu\/pages\/IMG_0761.html\" target=\"_blank\">2<\/a>)\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/peru07\/machu_picchu\/pages\/IMG_1008.html\" target=\"_blank\">3<\/a>).\u00a0The Inca even fashioned <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/peru07\/machu_picchu\/pages\/IMG_0759.html\" target=\"_blank\">image\u00a0rocks<\/a> as a special tribute to certain sacred peaks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve\u00a0recently returned from a trip to Bolivia\u00a0and Peru that culminated with\u00a0a visit to Machu Picchu.
