{"id":1893,"date":"2010-08-22T10:36:26","date_gmt":"2010-08-22T14:36:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/?p=1893"},"modified":"2011-11-03T22:17:53","modified_gmt":"2011-11-04T02:17:53","slug":"summer-vacation-hike-and-bike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/2010\/summer-vacation-hike-and-bike","title":{"rendered":"Summer Vacation &#8211; Hike and Bike!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We set out to see parts of the <strong>Eastern US<\/strong> we&#8217;d never been to.\u00a0[<a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/summer10\/\" target=\"_blank\">photo gallery<\/a>]\u00a0Our secondary goal was to find hiking and <strong>bicycle trails<\/strong> along the way.<strong> <\/strong>It turned out to be very difficult to identify acceptable cycling trails on the Web. <strong>The various &#8220;trails&#8221; websites, etc. are frequently misleading.<\/strong> For example, we were looking for <strong>paved trails in natural areas as far away from traffic as possible<\/strong>. You can&#8217;t really search for that in a generalizable way. <strong>Most hits were either mountain bike or urban commuter trails.<\/strong> The one exception appears to be <a href=\"http:\/\/railstotrails.org\" target=\"_blank\">trails based on old railroad rights of way<\/a>. We were ultimately successful as you can see below. We put the <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/2007\/01\/folding-bicycles\/\" target=\"_blank\">folding bikes<\/a> in the back of my car and hit the road&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/summer10\/content\/bin\/images\/large\/IMG_0712.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1985\" title=\"strange-fungi\" src=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/strange-fungi.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"96\" height=\"129\" \/><\/a>To start with we visited family in Athens Georgia, and rode the local <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/summer10\/content\/IMG_0210_large.html\" target=\"_blank\">urban bike trail<\/a>, which was very nice. There weren&#8217;t may photo ops but the scenery was spectacular in its own un-photographable way. This was surprisingly pleasant. Then proceed to climb part of Big Roundtop and the flank of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Little_Round_Top\" target=\"_blank\">Little Round Top<\/a> where\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joshua_Lawrence_Chamberlain\" target=\"_blank\">Col. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain<\/a> made his famous flanking maneuver. We then made our way winding through <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Devil%27s_Den\" target=\"_blank\">Devil&#8217;s Den<\/a>, The Wheat Field, and The Peach Orchard. We ended up at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pickett%27s_Charge#Infantry_assault\" target=\"_blank\">The Angle<\/a> and saw <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/summer10\/content\/IMG_0223_large.html\" target=\"_blank\">the spot<\/a> where <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewis_A._Armistead\" target=\"_blank\">Gen.\u00a0Armistead<\/a> died.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/summer10\/content\/bin\/images\/large\/IMG_0810.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1919\" title=\"cathy-ashuwillticook-rail-trail\" src=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/cathy-ashuwillticook-rail-trail-333x250.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/cathy-ashuwillticook-rail-trail-333x250.jpg 333w, https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/cathy-ashuwillticook-rail-trail-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/cathy-ashuwillticook-rail-trail.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 333px) 85vw, 333px\" \/><\/a>We reached our halfway point in upstate New York near Albany and again visited with family. This was our first unpaved <strong>&#8220;rock dust&#8221; trail<\/strong> and the bikes performed well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/summer10\/content\/bin\/images\/large\/IMG_0871_1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1936\" title=\"erie-canal-trail-sign\" src=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/erie-canal-trail-sign.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"98\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/summer10\/content\/bin\/images\/large\/IMG_0883_1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1934\" title=\"erie-canal-remnant\" src=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/erie-canal-remnant.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"98\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/summer10\/content\/bin\/images\/large\/IMG_0863_1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1935\" title=\"thimbleberry\" src=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/thimbleberry.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"99\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/summer10\/content\/bin\/images\/large\/IMG_0867_1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1936\" title=\"purple-loosestrife\" src=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/purple-loosestrife.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"130\" height=\"102\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We could see the remnants of the old <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Erie_Canal\" target=\"_blank\">Erie Canal<\/a> in several places. There were also many different roadside flowers including <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thimbleberry\" target=\"_blank\">Thimbleberry<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lythrum_salicaria\" target=\"_blank\">Purple Loosestrife<\/a> (shown above). The latter turns out to be an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.invasiveplants.net\/plants\/purpleloosestrife.htm\" target=\"_blank\">invasive species<\/a> and a cause of some concern.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/summer10\/content\/bin\/images\/large\/img_0927.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1941\" title=\"cathy-pine-creek-rail-trail\" src=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/cathy-pine-creek-rail-trail-333x250.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/cathy-pine-creek-rail-trail-333x250.jpg 333w, https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/cathy-pine-creek-rail-trail-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/cathy-pine-creek-rail-trail.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 333px) 85vw, 333px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The next day we took the back roads down into Pennsylvania and discovered the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pine_Creek_Rail_Trail\" target=\"_blank\">Pine Creek Rail Trail<\/a> near\u00a0<strong>Ansonia, PA<\/strong>. This was the best yet (!), completely isolated, following a lovely stream between <strong>thousand foot bluffs<\/strong>. Apparently there are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbase.com\/cwphoto\/pa_watefalls\" target=\"_blank\">numerous waterfalls<\/a> in the area. The surface was rock dust and well maintained.
