I once watched one harass\u00a0an <a href=\"http:\/\/bna.birds.cornell.edu\/bna\/species\/683\/\" target=\"_blank\">Osprey<\/a> (Pandion haliaetus) until the later gave up its catch. In addition to stealing from other birds, Bald Eagles can subsist completely on carrion. In spite of the name, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanscientist.org\/issues\/pub\/beauty-is-only-feather-deep\" target=\"_blank\">Bald Eagles are more closely related to vultures<\/a> than true Eagles (genus\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/bna.birds.cornell.edu\/bna\/species\/684\/\" target=\"_blank\">Aquila<\/a><\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>No lesser personage than <a title=\"Turkey as U.S. National Bird\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wild_Turkey#Turkey_as_U.S._national_bird\" target=\"_blank\">Ben Franklin<\/a> thought the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bna.birds.cornell.edu\/bna\/species\/022\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wild Turkey<\/a> (Meleagris gallopavo)\u00a0better represented the\u00a0aspirations\u00a0of the young country he helped found:\u00a0<em>&#8220;&#8230;the Turkey is in Comparison a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For all its splendor and power, the\u00a0Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)\u00a0has a dark side: opportunist\u00a0and bully.
