We rode from the Ridge Manor Trail Head to Floral City and back (approximately 34 miles,\u00a0see\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.railstotrailsonline.com\/images\/bikemap.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">detailed map<\/a>). This route took us through a wildlife management area and state forest. The trail is well maintained and mostly isolated from car traffic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/withlacoochee-river.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-310\" title=\"withlacoochee-river\" src=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/withlacoochee-river-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/withlacoochee-river-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/withlacoochee-river.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 85vw, 240px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At one point we were close enough to walk down to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dep.state.fl.us\/gwt\/guide\/regions\/crossflorida\/trails\/withlacoochee.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Withlacoochee River<\/a>. There was no perceptible current, but the water was clear. <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/withlacoochee09\/content\/IMG_2084_large.html\" target=\"_blank\">Cypress knees<\/a> were in abundance and reminded me of a coral reef.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/gopher-tortoise.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-309\" title=\"gopher-tortoise\" src=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/gopher-tortoise-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/gopher-tortoise-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/gopher-tortoise.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We saw two <a href=\"http:\/\/edis.ifas.ufl.edu\/UW048\" target=\"_blank\">gopher tortoises<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dnr.sc.gov\/cwcs\/pdf\/GopherTortoise.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">2<\/a>) along the way. Both had sandy soil clinging to their backs.
