Of course <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/everglades\/2004\/images\/map-day0.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">we avoided the actual marked &#8220;trail&#8221;<\/a> as much as possible.\u00a0This was a real paddler&#8217;s trip.\u00a0The trail is nominally 99 miles; I estimate we traveled more than 120 total. We went out to the <strong>Gulf<\/strong> twice and &#8220;boomeranged&#8221; back up the <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/everglades\/2004\/fullres\/22-harney-river-entrance.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Harney<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/everglades\/2004\/fullres\/30-broad-river-entrance.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Broad<\/a> Rivers with the tide. We also took a side trip down to <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/everglades\/2004\/fullres\/46-roseate-spoonbill.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Gopher Key<\/a> and saw lots of birds there, including a <strong>Roseate Spoonbill<\/strong>. We saw <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/everglades\/2004\/fullres\/19-dolphin-fishing.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">dolphins fishing in the shallows<\/a>. We also encountered manatees twice. The last night we returned to the Gulf and camped on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/everglades\/2004\/fullres\/58-pavilion-key.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Pavilion Key<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This was the big one \u2014 the complete Wilderness Waterway from Flamingo to Everglades City.
