After many hours of editing the first complete <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gallery of Photos<\/a><\/strong> is ready. I will add to this post periodically. Here is my overview of selected highlights&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>We arrived about noon and proceeded to nearby <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/\" target=\"_blank\">Black Turtle Bay<\/a><\/strong> where we saw <strong>Sea Turtles<\/strong>, <strong>Sharks<\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1060246.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Golden Rays<\/a><\/strong> amongst the mangroves. After a wet landing on a sandy beach we had our first encounters with <strong>Sea Lions<\/strong> and nesting <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1060392.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Frigate Birds<\/a><\/strong>. Over <strong>one\u00a0million birds<\/strong> nest here according to our guide. We saw thousands of <strong>Petrels<\/strong>, <strong>Shearwaters<\/strong>, <strong>Frigate Birds<\/strong>, and <strong>Boobies<\/strong> in the air and on their nests. The landscape is stark and strangely beautiful almost beyond words. We first climbed to the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1060895.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Bartolom\u00e9\u00a0summit<\/a><\/strong> for one of the most famous views in all of the\u00a0Gal\u00e1pagos. We were standing on an old cinder cone almost completely barren of plants. In the near distance was the pinnacle and our barkentine sailboat the <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1060882.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Mary Anne<\/a><\/em><\/strong>. Beyond a narrow channel was <strong>Santiago Island<\/strong> with black\u00a0lava flows and red rock outcrops. Spectacular!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1060851pano.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1060748_1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Gal\u00e1pagos\u00a0Hawk<\/a><\/strong> feeding on an iguana&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1060748_1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" and came across\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1070037.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Gal\u00e1pagos\u00a0Penquins<\/a><\/strong> sunning themselves on the rocks&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1070008-1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After lunch we crossed the narrow passage and landed on <strong>Santiago Island<\/strong>\u00a0at the site of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/index_10.html\" target=\"_blank\">extensive lava flows<\/a><\/strong> dating from the 1800s. <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1070093.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">We walked<\/a> for more than two miles over black <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1070147_48_49_50_51_52_53_tonemapped.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">P\u0101hoehoe\u00a0Lava<\/a><\/strong> with endless <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1070108.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">patterns<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1070094.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">swirls<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1070107.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">cracks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1070100-pano-Edit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full target=\"_blank\">R\u00e1bida Island<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0with its prominent red cliff and red sand beach. We took an extended dingy ride along the coast (to the right in the photo below). The hillsides were covered with dormant <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1070300.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Sandalwood Trees<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1070247.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Prickly Pear (<em>Opuntia<\/em>) Cactus<\/a><\/strong>. There were also <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1070321.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Iguanas<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1070284.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Sally Lightfoot Crabs<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1070276.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Sea Lions<\/a><\/strong> playing in the surf.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1070341.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full We also encountered a lovely <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1070604.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Large-Billed Flycatcher<\/a><\/strong>. It was so unafraid <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1070592.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">it landed on a branch<\/a> about four feet from href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/index_18.html\" target=\"_blank\">Mosquera<\/a>, which is a <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1070952.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">sea lion resort<\/a>!\u00a0\u00a0[<a There we saw several <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/index_23.html\" target=\"_blank\">Red-Billed Tropicbirds<\/a><\/strong> as they flew in the updrafts close to the cliff edge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1080193.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" target=\"_blank\">Tree-Sized Cactus<\/a><\/strong> and a large <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/content\/images\/large\/1080348-pano.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Sea Lion Along the way we had the opportunity to visit a water hole with several <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/travel\/ecuador13\/galapagos\/index_31.html\" target=\"_blank\">Giant Tortoises<\/a><\/strong> lounging in it.
