The gore\/supernatural bits help drive the plot, but are not the central focus. The story unfolds at a natural pace and the key dialog is almost languid. The setup is disarmingly simple: local boy with a schoolyard bully problem and the strange girl who moves in next door. The child actors are nearly perfect.
