The first  to <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/everglades\/2008a\/\" target=\"_blank\">Whitewater Bay<\/a> was extreme in several respects. Significant wind, <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/everglades\/2008a\/content\/31_whitewater_bay_fog_large.html\" target=\"_blank\">fog<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/everglades\/2008a\/content\/10_low_tide_large.html\" target=\"_blank\">mud<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/everglades\/2008a\/content\/39_lane_bay_moon_sunrise_large.html\" target=\"_blank\">traveling by moonlight<\/a>. We were tripped up by low tide for several hours on the second day with only a <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/everglades\/2008a\/content\/16_tricolor_heron_large.html\" target=\"_blank\">Tricolor Heron<\/a> for entertainment. The <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/everglades\/2008a\/content\/22_white_pelicans_sunrise_large.html\" target=\"_blank\">sunrise at North River<\/a> was spectacular as small flocks of <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/everglades\/2008a\/content\/21_white_pelicans_sunrise_large.html\" target=\"_blank\">White Pelicans<\/a> flew by.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/richard-in-red-kayak.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1539\" title=\"richard-in-red-kayak\" src=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/richard-in-red-kayak-333x250.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/richard-in-red-kayak-333x250.jpg 333w, https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/richard-in-red-kayak-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/richard-in-red-kayak.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 333px) 85vw, 333px\" \/><\/a>The second trip to <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/everglades\/2008b\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gopher Key<\/a> was a first in several ways: odd number of paddlers, <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/everglades\/2008b\/content\/img_1239_large.html\" target=\"_blank\">canoe plus kayak<\/a>, and a layover day for bushwacking. It turned out the <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/everglades\/2008b\/content\/img_1306_large.html\" target=\"_blank\">kayak<\/a> was not as desirable as we expected. Other than windy conditions, the canoe was preferred by all. <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/everglades\/2008b\/content\/img_1248_large.html\" target=\"_blank\">New Turkey Key<\/a> was disappointing due to <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/everglades\/2008b\/content\/img_1237_large.html\" target=\"_blank\">extensive hurricane damage<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/everglades\/2008b\/content\/img_1254_large.html\" target=\"_blank\">sailboats<\/a> with generators, but we made the best of it. On the third day we took a side trip up <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/everglades\/2008b\/content\/img_1267_large.html\" target=\"_blank\">Charlie&#8217;s Creek<\/a> to Gopher Key. It was strange, almost desert-like area, with large flocks of <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/everglades\/2008b\/content\/img_1264_large.html\" target=\"_blank\">American Avocet<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/everglades\/2008b\/content\/wd3541_large.html\" target=\"_blank\">White Pelicans<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Instead of one long trip I took two shorter trips back to back this year.
