Originally built by the\u00a0<strong>Pisidians<\/strong>\u00a0sometime before\u00a0500 BCE, the city is situated on a mountain pass more than\u00a01000 meters above the coastal plain. Our guide told us <strong>they were raiders<\/strong> who periodically\u00a0preyed upon the people below. In 333\u00a0BCE <strong>Alexander the Great<\/strong> surrounded Termessos but could not conquer it. After that the site was <strong>Hellenized<\/strong> and later improved upon by the <strong>Romans<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We had to hike up several hundred feet to reach the site. The <strong>Inner Wall<\/strong> that stopped Alexander is mostly intact,\u00a0as is the spectacular <strong>Greek-Style Theater<\/strong> at the top.
