For obvious reasons the finest artifacts have been removed from Ephesus<\/a><\/strong> and placed in a museum in a nearby city. The bust above is of Marcus Aurelius<\/strong> (Roman Emperor\u00a0from 161 to 180 CE). [Gallery<\/a>]\u00a0The image\u00a0below\u00a0shows a\u00a0Satyr<\/strong>\u00a0pursuing\u00a0a nymph or maiden.<\/p>\n There were two statues of Asclepius<\/strong> (the god of healing). Unfortunately neither one is intact.\u00a0[Notice the single snake<\/strong> on his staff, the symbol of medicine.]<\/p>\n \u00a0 At the ruins we saw a line of eroded Bull’s Head Column Capitals<\/a>. In the museum\u00a0we got to see a better example up close! I love the anatomic detail including the bulging veins!<\/p>\n \u00a0 The penultimate artifact\u00a0was found carefully buried nearby\u00a0(to hide it from vandals?), but did not originate there. This Statue of\u00a0Artemis<\/strong> was originally housed within the Famous Temple to the Goddess<\/a> (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World!).<\/p>\n \u00a0 To say this Fertility Cult<\/strong> figure is bizarre is to put it mildly! I can’t remember seeing an object with so much symbolic detail. One obvious question is “are those all breasts?” Our guide said they were thought to be Bulls’\u00a0Testicles<\/strong> (that’s right, testicles!).
