I’ve always been fascinated by 360\u00b0 spherical photographs<\/strong>\u00a0(sometimes called “mirrorballs,\u00a0planets or\u00a0wormholes”). [Click\u00a0to Enlarge]<\/p>\n

I bought a Ricoh Theta S\u00a0<\/strong>with two 180\u00b0 fisheye lenses pointing in opposite directions.\u00a0The raw photographs are\u00a0similar to\u00a0equirectangular maps<\/strong>\u00a0where the equator is “normal” and the poles are stretched. To prove this point I took a random map from the web and transformed it into a globe…<\/p>\n

The camera is controlled from a smartphone<\/strong>, and comes with software to turn the flat image into a sphere (top), a planet, or a wormhole (below).<\/p>\n

The photos above were taken with a special tripod<\/strong> that is mostly invisible. The camera does have a physical\u00a0shutter release<\/strong> so it can also be used as a handheld. [Note the giant hand, but where’s the camera?!]<\/p>\n

You can flatten the horizon<\/strong> for an ultra-wide angle panorama.<\/p>\n

Or bend the photo into a 360\u00b0 planet<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

In the two photos above, the camera is mounted on a two foot mast<\/strong> just in front of my feet.<\/p>\n

Trim the top and bottom and you have a 360\u00b0 conventional panorama<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

You can also\u00a0hold the camera above your head for an interesting effect…<\/p>\n

I finally understand how\u00a0these Mars Curiosity<\/a> self-portraits are possible, again where’s the camera?!<\/strong><\/p>\n
