Had a great time in spite of the contingencies! [<a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/everglades\/2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gallery<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8212\" src=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/everglades-map-2019.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"602\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/everglades-map-2019.jpg 440w, https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/everglades-map-2019-110x150.jpg 110w, https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/everglades-map-2019-183x250.jpg 183w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 440px) 85vw, 440px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This was a <strong>proof-of-concept trip<\/strong> in many ways: first trip on a <strong>sailing kayak with akas<\/strong> (outriggers) and&nbsp;<strong>homemade hakas<\/strong> (benches) for hiking out and potentially sleeping on board.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8214\" src=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/everglades-sailing-2019-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/everglades-sailing-2019-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/everglades-sailing-2019-1-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/everglades-sailing-2019-1-188x250.jpg 188w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Federal Government was closed due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/trumpshutdown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#trumpshutdown<\/a> so I had to self-register. <strong>Hats off to the National Park Staff who WERE working in the background to keep the place safe and clean.<\/strong> I assume they weren&#8217;t getting paid!<\/p>\n<p>I happened to leave on the morning of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/43069-super-blood-wolf-moon-eclipse-begins.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Super Blood Wolf Moon<\/a> so the tides were extreme. This delayed my departure.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ON9hTZtRV6I?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Once out in the Gulf the wind died and I peddled to the far end of <strong>Pavilion Key<\/strong> to make camp.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8218\" src=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/everglades-sailing-2019-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/everglades-sailing-2019-2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/everglades-sailing-2019-2-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/everglades-sailing-2019-2-374x250.jpg 374w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were no bugs so <strong>I slept out under the stars on top of my benches.<\/strong> This worked remarkably well. Being four inches above the sand is much better than being down in it!<\/p>\n<p>The wind rose the next day by the time the tide was coming in and I could set out. I estimate <strong>20 knots or more with gusts above 30<\/strong>! &nbsp;I reefed in my sail by half and proceeded to have a wild ride across the gap between islands. My homemade hiking stick failed so <strong>I had to steer with my foot<\/strong>. It was only a little terrifying.<\/p>\n<p>At that point I decided not to proceed down the coast and instead circle back to the relative shelter of <strong>Rabbit Key<\/strong>. We had a nice chat before I cast off.
