We spent most of the first day just getting to the trailhead on the extreme western edge of the park and establishing our first camp at <strong>Happy Canyon<\/strong>. I pitched my hammock between a juniper and a pinyon pine and was rocked to sleep by the wind all night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The riding got serious the next day going down the face of the <strong>Orange Cliffs<\/strong> on the <strong>Flint Trail<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/maze-utah-2019-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/maze-utah-2019-2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/maze-utah-2019-2-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/maze-utah-2019-2-375x250.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was <em>very steep and difficult<\/em> even for the vehicles. I did a lot of walking. Things only got worse the rest of the day with loose rocks, sand and drop-offs. We met a county employee with a huge <strong>6WD Grader<\/strong> who was actually maintaining the road (&#8220;every seven years whether it needs it our not&#8221;). When we told him where we were headed he laughed and said &#8220;We haven&#8217;t been back there in thirty years!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The area around <strong>Teapot Rock<\/strong> was especially challenging, requiring spotters and backing up around impossible corners. Late in the day we finally made it to the <strong>Land of Standing Rocks<\/strong>, a windswept plain punctuated by fantastic rock formations receding into the distance. Hard to beat! Along the way we met at pair of hikers who had crossed the <strong>Colorado River<\/strong> from Spanish Bottom in <strong>Inflatable Kayaks<\/strong> (!) that they had in their packs! They planned to hike upriver and paddle back to their car on the other side. I had a great time cycling several miles with Jeff as we retraced our route. We did not climb back up the Flint Trail however, exiting near the tiny town of <strong>Hite<\/strong> on the extreme upper end of <strong>Lake Powell<\/strong>.
