Now that many of us are sheltering in place from <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/2020\/the-approaching-covid19-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"COVID19 (opens in a new tab)\">COVID19<\/a><\/strong>, what could be better than a <strong>science-based game where the goal is to cooperate in order to defeat life-threatening viruses!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"812\" src=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/pandemic-board-game.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8599\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/pandemic-board-game.jpg 600w, https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/pandemic-board-game-111x150.jpg 111w, https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/pandemic-board-game-185x250.jpg 185w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The game is designed to <strong>mimic the behavior of contagious diseases<\/strong> which if left unchecked kill thousands of people (sound familiar?). There are several mechanisms to spread germs from one locale to another. <strong>Individual cities can become quickly overwhelmed<\/strong> (&#8220;outbreaks&#8221; in the game&#8217;s terminology). Outbreaks add to a &#8220;<strong>burden of disease<\/strong>&#8221; tracker on the side of the board. Several events can occur that will accelerate these infections to the point they become <strong>outbreaks<\/strong> (as outlined above).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pushing back on this process is the actual game play. <strong>Each player has a special role<\/strong> (medic, researcher, etc.) with special abilities. Unlike most games <strong>the point is to maximize the benefit for everyone<\/strong>. This leads to discussion and <strong>cooperative problem-solving<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leacock.com\/pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Pandemic (opens in a new tab)\">Pandemic<\/a><\/strong> is appropriate for older children, works best with four players, and takes less than an hour to complete.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I bought this award-winning board game about three years ago not guessing how relevant it would become.
