Both had enormous impact on their times and what came after. Both had a great deal to do with race. Their candidate was <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Rutherford B. Hayes (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rutherford_B._Hayes\" target=\"_blank\">Rutherford B. Hayes<\/a><\/strong> the governor of Ohio. The <strong>Democratic Party<\/strong>  nominated <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Samuel J. Tilden (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Samuel_J._Tilden\" target=\"_blank\">Samuel J. Ironically (from today&#8217;s perspective) the Republicans accused the Democrats of <strong>suppressing the vote of African Americans in the South<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The upshot of all this was the <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Compromise of 1877 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Compromise_of_1877\" target=\"_blank\">Compromise of 1877<\/a><\/strong>, an informal bit of horse-trading by Congress to give the majority of electoral votes to <strong>Hayes<\/strong> in return for the <strong>withdrawal of federal troops<\/strong> protecting the rights of former slaves in the South, thus <strong>ending Reconstruction<\/strong> and paving the way for the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jim_Crow_laws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Jim Crow (opens in a new tab)\">Jim Crow<\/a><\/strong> era to begin.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;I Still Trust The People&#8221; \u2014 Samuel J Tilden There are many interesting parallels between the 1876 and 2016 presidential elections.
