Stockton has the huge advantage of partially sheltered bays with places to tie up the boat. I pitched my <strong>hammock tent<\/strong> right on the beach between mature white and red pines. Generally, orchid seeds do not have food supplies inside them\u2026 The lady\u2019s slipper seeds require threads of fungus to break open and attach to the seed. The fungus will pass on food and nutrients. When the lady\u2019s slipper plant is older&#8230; the fungus will extract nutrients from its roots. This mutually beneficial relationship between the orchid and the fungus is known as \u201c<strong>symbiosis<\/strong>\u201d and is typical of almost all orchid species.<\/p><p>Pink lady\u2019s slipper takes many years to go from seed to mature plants. Pink lady&#8217;s slippers can live to be <strong>twenty years old<\/strong> or more\u2026&#8221;<\/p><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.fed.us\/wildflowers\/plant-of-the-week\/cypripedium_acaule.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"www.fs.fed.us (opens in a new tab)\">www.fs.fed.us<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"http:\/\/richard.rathe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/apostle-islands-2021-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8941\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/apostle-islands-2021-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/apostle-islands-2021-1-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/redmangrove.org\/rathe.org\/richard\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/apostle-islands-2021-1-375x250.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;These plants <strong>require bees for pollination<\/strong>. Bees are lured into the flower pouch through the front slit, attracted by the flower\u2019s bright color and sweet scent. Once inside, the bees find no reward, and discover that <strong>they are trapped, with only one point of escape<\/strong>. Inside the pouch, there are hairs that lead to a pair of exit openings, one beneath each pollen mass. The bee must pass under the stigma, so if it bears any pollen from a visit to another flower, it will be deposited before picking up a fresh load on the way out.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a reason I&#8217;ve never seen one of these flowers before\u2014June is <strong>bug season<\/strong> in the north woods. Campers avoid that month.
